Welcome! In this course you’ll learn professional techniques to strengthen your voice and improve your performance. You’ll build practical and effective ways to prepare for performance in musical theatre, including vocal warm-up exercises and strategies for managing your breath, mapping who you are to the meaning of a song, and crafting the emotional arc of the song.

Throughout the course, you will receive personal feedback and learn to evaluate your own performances for continued growth and improvement. You'll also gain insights of what is expected at professional auditions and tips to stand out.

In this course, you’ll build a foundation for your vocal success, learning about breath support, increasing breath capacity, effective vocal warmups, study of the lyrics and music, and using your body in the song. You’ll develop a method you can use to critique, diagnose—and fix—your weak spots to create performances that are free, unhindered, and reflect your personal best, every time.

What You Will Do:

Develop a routine that includes practical and effective warm-up exercises
Improve your performance of a song by identifying vocal transitions, preventing consonants from impeding your vocal production, and developing ease with phrasing
Make effective use of dynamics to heighten the emotional impact of the performance
Develop strategies for understanding the meaning of a song, memorizing it, and delivering it authentically
Evaluate your own performance and make adjustments based on feedback from others
Gain strategies to ensure you are prepared for professional auditions

All of your coursework will happen here on Interlochen Online. In addition to the online material, we will have a live class meeting once a week. You'll get to that meeting by clicking the "Zoom" link in the course menu. (Scheduled times will be posted as an Announcement.) All meetings will be recorded and posted in the course, in case you are unable to make them.
